| Appeal for Donations for the Neutering of Cats on Malta
Please help us to ease the suffering of the cats!
Unfortunately animal welfare on Malta is not supported by the State. No state animal sanctuaries exist and private animal welfare organisations receive no financial or other support from the state. Therefore it really has to be appreciated that there are some animal welfare workers on Malta, who are trying to help the animals in all sorts of ways. There are several cat colonies, which are being fed by private persons, who also see to it that the cats receive veterinary care. A big problem are the animals that previously had a home and have then been abandoned by their owners. It happens very often that these cats are put out in these cat colonies, where people can see that the cats there are fed regularly. Of course the people looking after these cat colonies aren't very happy about this, since every new animal means extra costs (neutering, treatment of injuries, etc...).
Another problem are cats that have been injured by dogs or in traffic.
These animals receive veterinary care and are looked after until their recovery. Some of the cats, which have sustained severe injuries, very often can't be integrated into the cat colony any more, because permanent damage (for example loss of an eye or leg) make life as a stray on the street impossible. For these cats we are trying to find new homes or they are taken to a cat shelter, to at least keep them safe and away from the roads. Sometimes it is also necessary to move whole cat colonies, for example if flats, hotels or a new road is built where they live. You can imagine how much effort is involved to achieve this, considering that some cat colonies comprise more than 80 animals. Since the people looking after these cat colonies do so by making huge personal and financial sacrifices, we would like to support them by handing out vouchers for castrations. Neutering of a female cat costs approx. 33 Euros, of a male cat approx. 17 Euros.
This Project has now been sponsored by The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust with a amount of money. The objects of the Trust are to protect animals and to promote and encourage practical work in preventing animal cruelty and the relief of animal suffering.
